Cloud computing has taken hold among securities firms and is being fully tested by the challenges of the current pandemic lockdown. In fact, cloud computing is proving to be a lifesaver for Ops teams stretched to the limit by the pandemic. But are firms facing trade-offs for this new reliance upon the cloud for mission-critical systems? In particular, the cloud is straining networks and security systems essential for the protection of remote staff and remote operations. In addition, staff members are using a variety of hardware from mobile phones and tablets to heavy-duty laptops, desktops, and servers to access cloud-based software systems, platforms, and infrastructures. This means that Ops teams must be aware of the many new ways remote staff members are accessing the firm, particularly public and private networking links, and combinations thereof. If that level of complexity weren’t enough, cloud links to clients and other industry participants have to be supported and advanced despite disruptions and high volumes.
